Will quitting smoking make you gain weight?

Nicotine is an appetite suppressant and slightly increases metabolic rate. When nicotine is removed, appetite returns to its normal level and metabolism adjusts. For some people this leads to a modest weight increase in the first few weeks. The health trade-off is not close: a small, temporary weight increase is far less damaging than the continued cardiovascular, respiratory, and oncological effects of ongoing smoking.
